We truly could not do this work without your support, so thank you, from the bottom of our hearts ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

One More Day to Donate!

One more day! Our fundraiser will be ending Tuesday, October 15, 2019, at 11:59pm PST!

We have been absolutely blown away by your support, and wanted to chat a bit about what your support means to us, concretely.

We work with low- to moderate-income clients, primarily victims and survivors of domestic violence. Our clients typically don't qualify for (or, more often, can't wait for) free legal aid, but they also can't afford a traditional attorney. The right to an attorney does not extend to civil matters. In Washington state, and most other states, free civil legal aid is only available to folks earning less than 200% of the poverty level. This means that if you're a single parent with one child, earning $34,000 annually, you earn "too much" to qualify for free civil legal aid. Yet, you also can't afford a traditional attorney. (Here in Washington state, attorneys charge anywhere from $250-$500 per hour.) As you can see, this creates a huge access to justice gap. Your donation allows us to help folks who are caught in that gap. We can charge them a reduced rate – providing them with quality affordable legal services. This means so much to us, and also to the folks that we serve.

Final Stretch!

Alright, all, we're in the final stretch! 🏁 There are four more days until our fundraiser ends, and thanks to our fabulous board member, Randy, we also have ✌️$100 Amazon gift cards to give away!

From now until the end of this thing (October 15, at 11:59 PST), for every $50 donated, you'll be entered to win! Two winners will be selected next week!

This is in addition to the Barkbox subscription, Seahawks tickets, and Serena Williams designed purse (if you missed that announcement, click here).

How to Win

Make a donation! For the entire fundraiser (including donations made in the past few days):

  • every $250 donated will get you one entry for the Seahawks tickets; AND

  • every $150 donated will get you one entry for the Barkbox; AND

  • every $50 donated will get you one entry for the Serena Williams designed purse!

We’ll add up your total donations at the end of the fundraiser, so if you donate $50 six times, that gets you six entries for the purse, two for the Barkbox, and one for the tickets!

Coffee Gift Card Winners!

Also, congratulations to Nancy W and John V who both won a $25 Caffe Ladro gift card, and Rhonda B who won a Starbucks gift card! Thanks to our friends at @ladroroasting for providing the Ladro gift cards, and huge thanks to all who donated! We'll announce the winners of last week's gift card giveaways soon!

A Note About Incentives / Prizes / Goodies / Whatever You Want to Call Them

We always have such a fun time giving back to you guys, but we also recognize that you are donating to us to help our clients, not to pay for goodies. We totally get that. The things we're giving away have been donated to us – either by our board members or local organizations. This means that 100% of your donation is going to our legal services program. 👍

Fundraiser Update! ALL the goodies!

Last week we shared with you that in place of the Purple Purse Challenge, we'd be hosting our very own annual fundraiser ("NAF's First Fall Fundraiser" – we ❤️ alliteration). Well guess what: IT'S LIVE! We're so excited and have so much good stuff in store for you!

Now through Monday, October 7, at 9:59am (PST) we'll be giving away three $25 gift cards – two to Caffe Ladro here in Seattle, and one to Starbucks!

ALSO: thanks to our amazingly generous board member, Dayna Ducey, in addition to the smaller goodies that we're giving away every few days, we'll also be offering up a pair of tickets to the December 22 Seattle Seahawks 🏈 home game, AND a year-long Barkbox 🐶 subscription (a fan favorite last year)!

ALSO ALSO: Allstate sent us a leather purple purse, designed by GOAT, Serena Williams! Look at that thing!

NAF's First Fall Fundraiser – Press Release

Northwest Advocacy Foundation’s First Fall Fundraiser

For the past two years, Northwest Advocacy Foundation has partnered with the Allstate Foundation’s Purple Purse Challenge. Earlier this year, Allstate announced that 2018 was the last Challenge. We are eternally grateful for the work that Allstate does regarding domestic violence, and also for selecting us to participate in this fundraiser. We aren’t exaggerating when we say that the Challenge has been a complete game changer for us. In fact, because of it, we have:

  • Met and connected with donors and supporters all over the United States and Canada! Not bad for a small (but mighty!) nonprofit in Seattle.

  • Developed relationships with tons of amazing local small businesses – many of whom generously provided us with all of those wonderful prizes that we gave away!

  • Doubled our impact from 2017 to 2018 – in 2018 we helped over twice as many people than we did the year before.

  • Raised the funds necessary to keep our doors open. In 2017, we raised $12,275 and won an additional $5,575. In 2018, we raised $14,735 and won an additional $12,500. To put those numbers into perspective for you: our annual budget is approximately $100,000, meaning that funds raised and won from the Purple Purse Challenge have contributed to 18% – 28% of our annual budget for the past two years.

Just because the Purple Purse Challenge is done, doesn’t mean we are. Access to justice continues to be a problem for low- to moderate-income individuals, and that’s doubly true for victims of domestic violence. We are committed to continuing to offer affordable legal services to folks who desperately need it, and we are hopeful that we can still count on your support. Beginning this year, we’ll be hosting an annual fundraiser during the first two weeks of October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Starting Tuesday, October 1, 2019, we’ll be asking you to make a donation, which will allow us to continue to offer legal advice to victims who are in abusive relationships but want to find a way out, represent survivors in court to secure domestic violence protection orders and protective parenting plans, and everything in between. To give you an idea of how your donation could help (any donation, regardless of size, is greatly appreciated):

  • $75 provides one client with a 60-minute consultation with an attorney;

  • $150 provides one client with a Petition for a Domestic Violence Protection Order, drafted by a licensed attorney;

  • $300 provides one client with legal representation in a court hearing – which can make all of the difference in the progression of their case;

  • $600 provides one client with legal representation in court-ordered mediation;

  • $1,125 provides all of the above.

The numbers above are for illustrative purposes, and do not guarantee that your donation of a specified amount will be used in whole or in part for the corresponding example.

Help Spread the Word

One of our favorite parts about the Challenge last year was interacting with donors, and giving away prizes, so once again this year we’ll be giving away tons of fun things, like:

  • Restaurant gift cards and certificates;

  • A year-long Barkbox subscription (courtesy of honorary board member, Rory Calhoun);

  • A pair of tickets to a Seattle Seahawks 2019 home game (courtesy of actual board member, Dayna Ducey);

  • AND more!

We are really looking forward to this fundraiser, and are so appreciative to have you sticking by our side throughout this transition. Thank you, sincerely, for your support these past few years. We are a small nonprofit, but we are able to make a meaningful impact in the lives of our clients, thanks to your continued support. We couldn’t do it without you!

PS: We’re also working on an in-person event sometime next year. Stay tuned for more information about this, and how you can meet our fantastic board and the attorneys who tirelessly advocate for the folks this organization serves.

Launching a Successful Practice CLE

190301 LASP presentation.JPG

Flashback Friday to just a few days ago at Seattle University School of Law – our very own Jessica Lewis was invited to speak at SU’s “Launching a Successful Practice” CLE. This CLE was intended to be a crash course of sorts in starting your own practice and working with clients (two things Jessica could talk about all day long).

Jessica spoke about setting hourly rates – and gave her take on how lawyers can increase access to justice by making legal services more affordable to folks of low- to moderate-means, while still making a living. We may be a little biased, but she was great 😊

2019 Incubator Cohort

As always, we had a blast at the Incubator reception last night! The Seattle University School of Law Incubator Program really does get better and better every year. We are so proud to have been members of the 2017 cohort, and are even prouder to support this wonderful program. Here are a few shots of the man himself, Stan Perkins, speaking to the 2019 cohort.
